Acoustic characterization of low intensity focused ultrasound system through skull

چکیده
Background/introduction Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound (LIFU) continues to gain traction in the field of non-invasive neuromodulation. Recent in vivo rat studies suggest that LIFU can be used to modulate region-specific brain activity in the motor cortex, leading investigators to conclude that LIFU may be a better alternative to more prominent, and more invasive, mechanisms of neuromodulation for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Epilepsy, and applications such as drug delivery applications. Despite these recent successes, a comprehensive understanding of beam patterns within the skull remains elusive.

Acoustic characterization of a neonate skull using a clinical MR-guided high intensity focused ultrasound system for pediatric neurological disorder treatment planning
Background/introduction Transcranial MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (TcMRgFUS) treatments are now clinically performed on adult patients for brain tumor or essential tremor therapies. However, no application has been proposed for children despite their thinner skull being less of an acoustic barrier and the presence of a fontanelle on neonates, which could constitute a natural acoustic window for...
متن کاملA Numerical Investigation of the Time Reversal Mirror Technique for Trans-skull Brain Cancer Ultrasound Surgery
Introduction: The medical applications of ultrasound on human brain are highly limited by the phase and amplitude aberrations induced by the heterogeneities of the skull. However, it has been shown that time reversing coupled with amplitude compensation can overcome these aberrations. In this work, a model for 2D simulation of the time reversal mirror technique is proposed to study the possibil...
متن کاملSensitivity of simulated transcranial ultrasound fields to acoustic medium property maps.
High intensity transcranial focused ultrasound is an FDA approved treatment for essential tremor, while low-intensity applications such as neurostimulation and opening the blood brain barrier are under active research. Simulations of transcranial ultrasound propagation are used both for focusing through the skull, and predicting intracranial fields. Maps of the skull acoustic properties are nec...

متن کاملTranscranial Focused Ultrasound Modulates Electrical Behavior of the Neurons: Design and Implementation of a Model
Background: Recently, ultrasonic neuromodulation research has been an important and interesting issue. Ultrasonic neuromodulation is possible by the use of low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) to stimulate or inhibit the neural structures. The primary capability of this method is the improvement in the treatment progress of certain neurological and psychiatric disorders noninvas...
